Welcome to Wedding Guest Wednesday, an occasional feature in which Solo-ish explores the joys and woes of attending other peoples weddings. Because its not all about the happy couple its a big day for guests as well.

So youre officiating a wedding. No pressure, right? Its only someones Biggest Day Ever.

Couples are increasingly choosing to have a friend or family member officiate their wedding ceremonies instead of a religious leader or civil servant. According to a recent study from Pew Research Center, 23 percent of U.S. adults describe themselves as atheists, agnostics or nothing in particular. And millennials, those born from 1981 to 1996, are far less religiously observant than the older cohorts. As these millennial marry and the power of organized religion dwindles, this trend will no doubt continue to grow.

Take a deep breath. Youve got this. Here are some tips and things Ive learned after officiating weddings in Thailand, California, New Hampshire and New York.

1. Get ordained. Start by getting ordained by the Universal Life Church Monastery. You dont need to order or pay for any official documents just filling out the website form is enough. The day of the wedding, youll sign the marriage license as Reverend under the Official Title section, and list your denomination as Universal Life. You are responsible for mailing in the signed license following the ceremony.

Often our ministers will present the couple with a copy of yourOrdination Credential or the official Wedding Officiant Certificate showing your legal status as a Universal Life Church Minister. Do You Need Contracts For Wedding Officiant Services

Many officiants choose to have the couple sign a contract, and we strongly suggest you do so. Our Facebook group offers a few samples, but we suggest that you let your attorney review it. The contract will spell out who is responsible for what, and by when, which will help avoid any issues that may crop up in the future.

Discuss The Couple’s Overall Vision For The Ceremony

Sit down and walk through the ceremony outline with the couple, as each will want something different. With religious ceremonies, there’s a reasonably set pattern and format, but with secular weddings, the couples sometimes want to throw out the entire playbook. It’s key to talk to them upfront so you can understand their vision for the ceremony.

Once you’ve figured out all of the deadlines, write them down. Mark up a calendar to outline when you need to have your documents by, when fees need to be paid, and when you need to have the couple’s marriage license turned in.

Wedding Ceremonies From Around The World

How to get ready to officiate a wedding

Commonly, wedding ceremonies around the world share rituals that are influenced by various cultural traditions. Among the many rituals practiced during wedding ceremonies, the most essential and constant element is the symbolic expression of the unification between the man and woman. The union can be signified by exchanging rings, joining of hands, tying together the garments owned by the bride and groom, or other gestures that could be a representation of the union between the couple. Likewise, many rituals that are incorporated within the ceremony are done in order to emphasize the wedding as a passage for the foundation of the family. For example, in Hindu wedding ceremonies, the couple circles a sacred fire in order to promote the fertility of their union .

Why More Couples Are Getting Married By A Friend

In November, Alex Lynn, 26, will marry her fiancé, Alex Tignor, 27. The officiant for their wedding will be none other than their close friend, who is also named Alex. To have someone so important to us be the person who pronounces us husband and wife will make our ceremony all the more special and meaningful, Lynn says. This three-Alex wedding will be one of a growing number of marriage ceremonies officiated by a friend of the couple. Many couples are forgoing religious norms and traditional vows for wedding ceremonies they feel are more individualized, more intimate, and maybe even more fun.

The expectations for marriage have shifted, and sociologists refer to this as kind of a deinstitutionalization of marriage, Lamont explains. Basically meaning that the social norms that guided marriage have become more negotiable, flexible, and individualized. A wedding has become a public statement about who you are as a couple, Lamont notes. What better way to personalize that statement than to have it made by someone who knows you both well?

Thats what Alex Lynn and her fiancé were thinking. They were friends before they started dating and loved the idea of having someone from their shared friend group officiate. Alex B., she says of her officiant, has been there through all the stages of our relationship, back when we were just friends, and he even photographed our proposal back in October.

Who Should You Ask To Officiate

Your officiant should be someone you care about , and whom you trust to make your ceremony special. This person should be reliable and organized. They’ll need to go through the ordination process and be prepared on your wedding day. You’ll also want to ask someone who feels comfortable speaking in front of crowds, since, along with you and your future spouse, they will be the center of attention during your ceremony.
