The Golden Rule Of Wedding Dress Alterations

Before we get into our guide, we want to talk about the golden rule of wedding dress alterations, or indeed any alterations – when you bring a garment to a seamstress for alterations, it should be slightly too big for you, rather than too small. This is required to achieve a really precise fit. Altering a dress that is too small for you is a more complicated job, one that the seamstress sometimes can’t perform. This might seem obvious, but we sometimes hear from brides who are a little panicked that their boutique ordered a dress that is too large for them – don’t worry, this is a very necessary part of the process!

Wedding Dress Alterations Cost

This ultimately depends on the wedding dress in question, but the general rule states that you can alter a wedding gown two sizes down and a size up. If a dress has to be taken in three sizes, it might need to be recut, which might incur additional costs.

However, taking in a dress is relatively easy letting out a dress is more difficult. You can only let it out depending on the amount of seam allowance on the dress itself. If theres enough material, the dressmaker could make the gown a size bigger without tampering with its structural integrity.

That doesnt mean that your dress size cant be let out two or even three sizes bigger. What Factors Increase Wedding Dress Alteration Costs

When computing how much it costs to get your wedding dress altered, consider these things:

  • The amount of work required
  • The type of fabric
  • If the alterations are rushed
  • If its a busy season, like the holidays or around school prom
  • The state of the gown before alteration
  • The experience of the seamstress
  • Average Wedding Dress Cost By Materials

Now for the fun part, with probably the most variety. There are endless wedding dress fabrics on the market today, ranging from countless types of silk and satin to lace, organza and so much more. As you might expect, not all materials are created equal, and your selection plays a significant role in your wedding dress cost. Brides generally pay more for luxurious fabrics like silk, charmeuse, hand-embroidered lace, and certain types of satin. If youre looking to reduce the price tag, look for dresses made with blended or synthetic fabrics like polyester, or other lower-cost options like chiffon, taffeta, crepe, and rayon.

The amount of detailing also changes the construction of the dress and the labor that goes into it, which drives up the overall wedding dress cost. Expect the price to rise with the amount of beading, embroidery, appliqués, crystals, and other embellishments. High-quality materials that take hours and hours of labor to create by hand, such as handmade lace, are going to be more expensive than machine-made options.

WEDDING DRESS ALTERATIONS COST HOW MUCH?!

It can be tempting to bring your whole bridal party along for a look at the dress but this isnt a good idea most boutiques will advise ideally only one guest, certainly no more than two.

There’s a good reason for this. A fittings appointment should involve plenty of communication with the seamstress without the distraction of well-meaning others.

If you’ll need help getting in and out of your dress, or you’re having a bustle, it’s worth bringing a trusted friend or family member who can learn how to assist you on the day.

For your final fitting, we suggest bringing along your accessories, to give you a sense of the overall look. We’ve seen advice that you should also get your makeup done for your fitting, for an extra confidence boost, but we’ve not so sure about this and would actually advise keeping products to a minimum a foundation streak or mascara splotches on your dress are not conducive to a stress-free fitting.

I highly recommend picking a seamstress or tailor that specializes in wedding gowns, Lara said. Wedding gowns are much more intricate, complex, and delicate than regular clothing or even bridesmaid dresses, so you want someone who has the knowledge to work on them.

Many bridal shops give you recommended seamstresses, but if you are on your own to choose, look for places that have great online reviews. If you have friends who have gotten married and enjoyed their alterations experience, you can ask them to recommend their tailor as well.

Wear Your Wedding Heels And Undergarments To Each Alteration

You should bring and wear your wedding heels and undergarments youll wear for your big day on each alteration appointment. This will help the stylist and tailor to obtain the proper fit. You want to wear the very same wedding shoes and undergarments youll be wearing at your wedding, including shapewear, for the best possible tailoring.

Bringing in your wedding shoes is important, as it allows the tailor to adjust the hem. However, if you havent picked out your wedding shoes, bring a pair of height-compatible ones youd wear on your special day.

Minor Alterations To Your Pre Purchased Wedding Dress

Wedding Dress Alterations are required when you purchase your Gown, and you love it .but it just doesnt fit perfectlyyet!

This may mean generally refitting to your size, altering the length, adjusting the bust area for a different cup size or inserting bra cups for a fuller bust look to support the bodice of the Gown or repairing some beadwork. Your hemline may need to rise, as well as lace borders that need to be hand removed, then applied back on at the correct length, with no visible signs of alterations at all, of course!

All Wedding Dress alterations are possible and will make an enormous difference to your Gown making it look as if it were made for you. This is because I am a qualified pattern maker and designer and the alterations are made as the body adjustment requires it not just taking it in a little at the side.

This type of alteration, will naturally depend on the amount and type of work required, are generally from about $400 $600.
