What To Do With Your Engagement Ring When She Says No
Theres just no way to describe the feeling when a relationship ends after a proposal. You may experience a flood of completely understandable emotions surprise, anger, emptiness, and many others.
Finally, after the dust settles, you realize youre now stuck with an expensive diamond engagement ring. What are you supposed to do with it now?
- Keep it?
- Sell it?
Every situation is different. The right decision depends on your situation and where you bought the ring. As a jewelry expert, I can tell you that 9 times out of 10, returning the ring will actually get you less of your money back than selling it to a certified jeweler. In most situations, the best option is to sell.
Lets look at each option in more detail.
Return Custom Designed Or Engraved Rings
Jewelers will rarely process full refunds for custom pieces. These are often impossible to resell as-is. Some retailers, such as Kay Jewelers, state this clearly in their return policies. Policies vary on engraved rings. Some companies wont accept them as returns, whereas others will refund the ring but not the engraving fee.
You Can Sell Your Setting
Whether or not you decide to sell your diamond, know that you can just as easily sell your setting.
Your setting will be worth the scrap gold price. Even if your ex paid $4,050 for a custom setting, your ring will still be melted down to scrap gold. Why? Almost everyone wants a specific, unique design for their engagement ring. Rather than reusing your ring, a consumer would prefer their own design.
While its a financial loss to sell your ring for scrap gold, youre at least able to recoup some of the cost. Most pawn shops and jewelry stores pay about 50 cents for every dollar of scrap gold value. For example, if the scrap value for your ring is $2,000, a store will probably offer to buy the ring for about $1,000. However, at Abe Mor, they offer 75 cents for every dollar of scrap value. So, in that example, youd receive $1,500 for the $2,000 scrap gold value, instead of $1,000. And if you work through Abe Mor, theyll handle the resale of your diamond and setting.
Returning A Ring You Bought Online
The Internet is a great resource when it comes to shopping for engagement rings, since it provides access to every style and material you can imagine. However, it also adds another layer of complication to the return process. In general, the process is the same as a brick and mortar store, but it helps to keep these tips in mind:
- Look on the website for the return policy. Most stores clearly state this information on their company page.
- If you aren’t sure whether your return is possible, call a representative of the store. Because a return can be complicated and fraught with emotion, email isn’t the best medium for this kind of transaction.
- Tell the store you plan to leave feedback about your experience. Sites like WeddingBee and The Knot have message boards where you can tell other brides-to-be about your experiences with specific jewelers.

What Happens To Wedding Rings When You Divorce
Most advice columns suggest that there is no need to return your wedding/engagement ring to your former spouse. While the advice in these columns is based on etiquette rather than law, in this case the law also suggests that there is no obligation to return your ring.
A wedding ring is generally given as a gift, which means the person to whom it was given becomes its owner in law. When people separate, there is no requirement that gifts given between spouses are to be returned.
If you choose to keep your wedding ring, you should know that it may form part of your net family property, which is used to calculate the equalization payment payable by married spouses when they separate. If you’re unclear on what an equalization payment is, you should review previous posts.
You should know that gifts and inheritances received from a third party during the marriage are excluded from a net family property calculation, as are certain insurance proceeds.
Gifts you receive from your spouse during the marriage can have an impact on your net family property, because by specifying “third party” the result is that gifts received between spouses will form part of the net family property. That means that if your spouse gives you a gift during marriage, it will increase your net family property, which could have an impact on the equalization payment.
Cash For Gold Exchanges
Most cities will have a cash for gold exchange type of place where you can trade in gold rings. Its a good way to get cash for jewelry fast. Usually, these stores will buy your gold in order to melt it down and reuse it.
The price these types of places offer can be a little lower that whats offered at other places, but its a quick and easy way to get some cash fast for gold rings.
You can find cash for gold exchanges near you by having a quick search on Google. Just type in sell gold near me and hit search and you should get a list of places near you where you can get cash for your gold jewelry. You can always call ahead at some of these places to see if they purchase gold rings.

When Should Someone Sell Their Wedding Ring If They Don’t Have Children Or Don’t Intend To Pass It Down
There are circumstances in divorce actions that might give pause to selling the ring while property is not yet divided, shares Cohen. So its more of a strategic reason versus strictly legal reason.
In a messy divorce, everything is a bargaining chip. Your wedding ring can certainly be one of them, from a sentimental or monetary perspective. Keep those cards close to your chest until the game is called, just in case.
Can You Return An Engagement Ring
After determining who has the rights to the engagement ring, the next step is returning it. Each store will have a different return policy and it is important to learn them in order to get the best exchange deal. Some stores have a dated return policy that range from as little as 90 days to a year from the date of purchase.
However the reality is that most stores will simply not take ring to the ring back. Especially those that:
- Have been personalized
- Were repaired in another store
- Are missing paper work
- Were on clearance
Also, some stores will only consider an exchange for a different piece of identical or higher value rather than a refund.

What Is A Legal Gift
We learned at an early age that if you give someone a gift, you shouldn’t expect it back. There’s nothing different between then and now, so if you offer someone an engagement ring, with the intention of giving it to your partner as a gift, and your partner accepts it, you shouldn’t expect the ring back if you break up.
A Comfortable Effortless Fit
When wedding rings slide around on your finger its simply uncomfortable. Furthermore, metal rubbing against your skin can cause allergic reactions or skin irritations. Not to mention the painful pinching! Soldering wedding rings together creates a much more comfortable fit. In fact, you wont even think about it because when two rings are soldered together, they move as one.
So, have we sold you on soldering your wedding rings? Great! But first we need to address the cons of ring soldering.

What About The Legalities
The laws determining which party is entitled to the engagement ring varies by country and by US state. Certain states view the ring as a conditional gift, with the condition being marriage. Once the vows are exchanged a contractual agreement is formed and the person who wants to divorce is breaking the contract. This means that this individual is at fault and will not get the ring.
For example, if a the buyer of the ring wants to get a divorce, then the receiver of the ring can claim that they get to keep the ring as they were not the one who broke the contract. Alternatively, if the recipient of the ring wants to get a divorce, then the buyer has the right to the engagement ring. However, if the couple splits before the marriage then the condition of marriage was never met and the ring can be taken back by its buyer.
Some courts state that if the engagement ring was given on a gift giving holiday, such as Christmas or a birthday, then it is strictly a gift for its respective holiday and should not be recovered by its buyer. Few states view the ring as an unconditional gift, which means that once the gift is accepted by its recipient, then the gift exchange is complete and irrevocable, regardless of who is at fault.
What Is Ring Soldering
Soldering wedding rings together is the process of fuzing two rings together to form one bridal set. Many brides choose to have their wedding rings soldered as a way of bonding their two beloved wedding bands together.
