What Is A Wedding Officiant
A wedding officiant is the leader of the wedding ceremony. They work with the couple to prepare materials for the ceremony and perform the marriage on the day-of.
According to expert Natasha Anakotta, an officiant can expect to spend “anywhere from six months to a full year before the ceremony” preparing and officiating each wedding. “This allows enough time for ordering credentials and official documents, completing minister registration, working with the couple on the ceremony creation, practicing, and working out the logistics and details,” Anakotta says.

Can You Officiate Your Own Wedding
If you live in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia, couples can marry sans officiant in front of witnesses, if they turn in the necessary legal paperwork. However, all other states require an officiant for a legal and recognized marriage. An officiant only needs to meet your state’s legal qualifications for performing your marriage ceremony.

How To Keep A Record Of Ordained Ministers
Keep a good record of all ministers that are commissioned, licensed, ordained, active, inactive, and revoked. Make sure that his/her role as a minister is conveying your churchs message and mission. Require that the minister maintain a meaningful relationship with the ordaining church by attending conferences or services at least once a year.
Conducting The Marriage Ceremony
Texas law does not provide many details about the actual marriage ceremony and how it may be conducted. Instead of regulating what is said or done in a ceremony, the law focuses on time periods within which certain things must be done.
Once a couple obtains a , the law says the following about the ceremony itself:
- There is a 72-hour waiting period between the issuance of a marriage license and the ceremony, with certain exceptions. Section 2.204.
- A marriage license expires if a ceremony isn’t conducted before the 90th day after the license was issued. Section 2.201.
- The officiant must determine whether the license has expired and is prohibited from conducting a ceremony if it is expired. Section 2.207.
- A guide created for county clerks by the Department of State Health Services in 2015 on the best practices to use when issuing marriage licenses. New York Marriage Laws
A clergyman or minister of any religion, or by the senior leader, or any of the other leaders, of The Society for Ethical Culture in the city of New York, having its principal office in the borough of Manhattan, or by the leader of The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, having its principal office in the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, or of the Westchester Ethical Society, having its principal office in Westchester county, or of the Ethical Culture Society of Long Island, having its principal office in Nassau county, or of the Riverdale-Yonkers Ethical Society having its principal office in Bronx county, or by the leader of any other Ethical Culture Society affiliated with the American Ethical Union. The term “clergyman” or “minister” when used in this article, shall include those defined in section two of the religious corporations law. The word “magistrate,” when so used, includes any person referred to in the second or third subdivision.

Can Universal Life Church Ministers Perform Marriages In New York
Weddings performed by ministers ordained in the Universal Life Church Monastery found to be legally binding by the Appellate Court of New York. On April 25, 2013, a court decision upheld the legal rights of ministers of the Universal Life Church Monastery to solemnize marriages in the state of New York.
Who Can Legally Perform A Marriage Ceremony In Florida
The following persons can perform a marriage ceremony in the state of Florida:
- All regularly ordained ministers of the gospel, elders in communion with a church, or other ordained clergy.
- A minister who has been recognized in the manner required by the regulations of the respective denomination to perform marriage ceremonies.
- All Florida judicial officers, including retired judicial officers.
- Public notaries of the State of Florida. Florida notaries can on their duties when performing marriages here.
- “Quakers” or “Friends,” may perform marriages in the manner and form used or practiced in their societies.
- Captains of a ship, if the captain is a notary and the ship is in Florida waters, which is within three geographic miles from the coastline at the time of the ceremony.
- Clerks of the Circuit Court: Deputy clerks are authorized and available during normal working hours, Monday through Friday, to perform ceremonies at Clerk locations in Plant City and Pierce Street Tampa. Appointments are required and performed during our normal business hours with your valid marriage license. The fee for this service is $30.00.

No Minister Registration Required
Sign The Marriage License
OK, almost done! This is the final step. After the ceremony, both the minister and the couple must sign the marriage license. In some localities, witnesses to the ceremony will also be required to sign . Once all the signatures have been collected, simply return the license to the county clerks office. One final note: the time window for returning the document can vary from place to place make sure it gets returned prior to specified the due date.
After all the paperwork has been submitted to the proper authorities, the wedding ceremony will be official. Congratulations, your job is done!

Keep The Wedding Ceremony Under 20 Minutes
No matter how good you are as a wedding minister, after about 15 minutes, even the most sentimental and romantic guests in the audience will start to zone out and daydream about the buffet and wedding cake.
