Can Our Friend Do Our Marriage Ceremony For Us

Subject: Canadian Engineer as celebrant in Australia

Question: My Fiance is Australian, I am Canadian and we live in Canada. However, we are planning on getting married in Australia. I have a friend who is a professional engineer who we would like to perform the ceremony. Is this a legal possibility in Australia, if so, what are the steps involved for this person to be qualified to perform the wedding ceremony in Australia?Thank-you for your time,

Answer:

Dear NikkiCongratulations on you upcoming marriage. Australia’s independent civil marriage celebrants are unique in the world in that they:

No need for your friend to do the training, which would be an incredibly expensive gift to accept from him, when you can engage a independent civil celebrant for only a portion of the cost of training and becoming authorised. The cost to your friend would be approx. $ 2000 to train, 6 to 12 months time of his time , $600 to apply, plus $240 in annual fees plus the fee he would normally get as the authorised celebrant = $28,000 +Instead you could suggest he pay the fee for an authorised celebrant to work with him as he may deliver most of the ceremony.

The celebrant is required to:

The authorised celebrant is then accountable for the validity of your marriage,Im sure you will find a celebrant to suit your purposes from one of the celebrant associations in our Coalition:

Formalities Before The Marriage

The future spouses must meet with the officiant before the marriage. The officiant can ask them for all the information needed to perform the marriage, for example, the future spouses names, addresses, age and civil status. The officiant might also ask the future spouses to provide official documents proving their civil status. The officiant must make sure that the future spouses meet all legal requirements, in particular with respect to their age and civil status. The officiant must also ensure that both future spouses have given free and informed consent to the marriage.

The officiant must apply to the Directeur de létat civil for publication of a notice of marriage. This notice must be published on the Directeurs website at least 20 days before the marriage. The notice includes the name, address, place and year of birth of each future spouse, the date chosen for the ceremony and the name of the officiant. A witness must confirm this information. The witness doesnt have to be one of the witnesses to the marriage. The marriage must take place within three months following publication of the notice. If not, a new notice must be published.

In some serious cases, the officiant or the Directeur de létat civil can decide not to publish a notice, for example, if one of the future spouses is seriously ill and in danger of dying.

What Is A Wedding Officiant

A wedding officiant is the leader of the wedding ceremony. They work with the couple to prepare materials for the ceremony and perform the marriage on the day-of.

According to expert Natasha Anakotta, an officiant can expect to spend “anywhere from six months to a full year before the ceremony” preparing and officiating each wedding. “This allows enough time for ordering credentials and official documents, completing minister registration, working with the couple on the ceremony creation, practicing, and working out the logistics and details,” Anakotta says.

Lets look at it from the perspective of the friend you asked to officiate your wedding. The costs and the time required to become an officiant, as well as the requirement to formally associate yourself with a strongly opinionated institution there are many reasons why your friend may be reluctant to become ordained only for the purpose of officiating your wedding. But these are not the only concerns that may arise in their mind.

A wedding ceremony requires someone who can speak with authority, grapple with serious issues, and tactfully deal with others emotions. Professional officiants have the distance and the experience they can give advice without sounding preachy they can be serious but not somber, they can find the right words to support the overwhelmed bride and the speechless groom.

Even if your friend has no problem speaking in front of a crowd, most people are uncomfortable talking about serious emotional matters, and devolve either into tears or into levity. Doing an amazing wedding ceremony for two special people is a big responsibility. Your friend wants the best for you. If it means them saying no, they are doing whats best for you.

Dont take it personally, and make sure that you plan for this contingency. Begin talking to them early enough, give them an opportunity to think it through, and manage your timeline carefully so you are not left without an officiant.

Wedding Guest Or Wedding Officiant

First up, does your family member or friend want, I mean REALLY want the huge responsibility of orchestrating the theatrics of the wedding ceremony itself, making sure that the entire wedding party does and says what they need them to do and say, exactly when you need them to do and say it?

Are they sure, I mean REALLY sure that they want the enormous pressure of writing the absolutely perfect wedding script that captures the love story of the wedding couple, with the right degree of emotion that delivers the wedding vibe that the couple have set their heart on without getting teary themselves?

Is your family member or friend certain, I mean REALLY certain that they can deliver the ceremony in a professional manner that truly connects with every single person at that wedding?

Or would they really prefer to be a wedding guest, relaxing at the ceremony with the other guests and enjoying the whole wedding experience, celebrating the couples union along with the other family members and friends?

You Must Obtain A Self

In order for your ceremony to be officiated by a friend, family, or someone who is otherwise NOT recognized by Pennsylvania as a religious or state official, you only need to do one thing. When applying for a marriage license at the Department of Court Records, request a self-uniting marriage license. Be prepared that this type of license may cost more than a traditional license in some counties, like Washington County. However, its as legally binding as a standard marriage license and valid in all Pennsylvania counties. The only difference is that instead of having a spot for the officiant to sign and make it official in the eyes of the county, there are lines for two witnesses.
