What Never To Wear To A Wedding

    Jeans, Hats, Non-Collared Shirts

The standard rules of being well-dressed for a wedding still apply, so just like a restaurant or private club, the warning of ripped jeans, baseball hats, and non-collared shirts aren’t appropriate –unless it’s at the request of the couple that you dress down.

    White or Off-White

Please don’t wear white or off-white dresses or anything that could perhaps photograph as white. Head- to-toe white suits or jumpsuits are also off-limits, too. Pale pastels like the palest blues, greens, yellows, grays, nudes and blushes all have a tendency to look lighter than they are in photos. A white wrap or sweater to throw on if you get chilly is generally fine, especially if it’s after the ceremony. Prints with some white elements are ok but just be sure the colors are much more predominant than any white background. We wrote a whole post about wearing white to a wedding, but we’re sure you get it — please, just don’t!

Anything Too Revealing or Too Short

And of course, don’t wear anything too short or revealing, and don’t look unkempt or wrinkled. If you have to fight with your outfit to keep parts of your body you’d rather not show, it might not be the right choice.

Tip #1 Match The Jumpsuit To The Wedding Theme

There are different styles and colors of jumpsuits, which means its possible to find the best jumpsuit for the theme and type of wedding youre attending. Some jumpsuits can also be casual, while others look more appropriate for a formal dress code.

Therefore, check the wedding invitation to know the dress code, wedding theme, and color palette to choose the jumpsuit you should wear as a wedding guest. For example, casual outdoor weddings like those held on the beach or parks can have floral jumpsuits that may show a bit of skin, whether its sleeveless or V-neck.

On the contrary, guests attending a formal indoor wedding such as religious ceremonies and conservative settings must opt for a dark-colored jumpsuit that looks modest and sophisticated. If needed, you may want to wear something over it to cover your chest area or arms.

What Not To Wear To A Wedding

Though some weddings have a specific dress code, many don’t, and there are outfits that you should not wear. As you ponder on what to wear, always remember that the impression you make is important. Below are some outfits that you should not wear to a wedding.

    • Top with an extra-low neckline, especially if you have no bra. This may be particularly improper if it shows too much of your bust.
    • A white dress that can be confused with the brides gown.
    • Micro-mini skirt.
    • Transparent dresses or skirts, especially if it shows your underwear.
    • Office or business wear, although an elegant pantsuit with heels works if you don’t like dresses.
    • T-shirts.
    • Jeans.
    • Backless dresses that show your bra band. If you want to wear a backless dress, make sure it has a built-in bra.
    • A dress or skirt that shows your bike shorts underneath.
    • Flip-flops, unless its a casual, flip-flop wedding.
    • Plastic footwear.
    • Sportswear like a jogging suit.
    • Sneakers or tennis shoes.

If you avoid these types of clothing, you will have a clearer picture of what you can wear to the occasion. Avoid clothing that screams, Look at me! This can be seen as desperate and disrespectful to the bride.

Whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident will be perfect.

    Formal Beach Wedding Attire

For a formal beach wedding, the attire may be somewhat difficult. For men, you have to wear black tie attire which means a full suit with a jacket. You may opt for a lighter fabric suit so that you are not too warm with the summer temperatures.

Formal beach wedding attire for women often means resort wear gowns in different color options and formal sandals. Oftentimes the most difficult part of finding what to wear is finding acceptable footwear options. Sand is hard to walk in when you have closed toe or high heel shoes.

Evening weddings are more likely to have formal attire than daytime weddings. A formal wedding will usually indicate on the invitation that guests should wear black tie attire or formal attire.

What To Wear To A Winter Wedding

Before you start shopping, it’s important to know the etiquette behind what to wear to a winter wedding. Winter wedding outfits should be fit for the occasionthe weather and the dress code of the event should both help dictate what you wear. An upscale evening winter wedding will require a formal outfit, while a casual look is acceptable for a less formal daytime event.

When browsing winter wedding guest dresses, don’t forget to shop practically. While you might want to wear a slinky mini dress or an off-the-shoulder gown, consider how the weather might affect your fashion choices. A cozy wrap or shawl can easily winterize a look while keeping you warm, so consider investing in a coverup for all of your winter events. Fabric and color are also two important components of your winter wedding guest outfit. Deep jewel tones and rich fabrics like velvet and satin are great choices for weddings in cooler months. And when it comes to length, more fabric may help you stay warm, but don’t count out sleeveless outfits altogether. If you love to spend time on the dance floor or mingling with other guests, you might be more comfortable in a short-sleeve or sleeveless option.

What To Wear To A Beach Wedding: Women

    • If the invitation indicates that you should wear beach formal attire, then a long, elegant gown is perfectly appropriate.
    • Semi-formal beach attire calls for short or tea length dresses, which are great because they wont drag in the sand, plus they transition beautifully to a reception venue held at a restaurant or oceanfront hotel.
    • Are you wondering what to wear to a casual beach wedding? Our advice is a nice Maxi dress. A maxi dress is loose fitting, especially around the bottom of the dress so you can easily sweep it across the sand and brush it clean on land for a seaside reception.

How To Choose The Right Winter Wedding Outfit For Cold Weather

The biggest challenge when deciding what to wear to a winter wedding as a guest is the weather. Thankfully, we’ve got some tips on picking out an outfit that’s appropriate for chilly temperatures. “Guests of winter weddings should consider fabric types, outerwear, and footwear carefully to protect from the elements,” says Sullivan. She recommends choosing an outfit with thicker fabric made from natural fibers, such as wool. Consider avoiding outfit ideas that have short sleeves or are sleeveless, like a slip dress, unless youre planning to layer a jacket or sweater on top.

Whether you’re searching for a formal tuxedo or semi-formal suit for your winter wedding attire, Sudhakar also suggests turning to wool. “Heavier textiles such as wool flannel in a solid color are just as elegant as basic wool, but with that added texture and warmth for the colder months,” she adds. Wondering what to wear to a casual winter wedding? For casual or daytime winter wedding guest attire, a nice suit is still a must. That said, feel free to play around with accessories depending on the dress code, such as adding a fun holiday-themed tie or pocket square.
