How To Be A Licensed Wedding Officiant

Who Can Officiate A Wedding

How to Become a Wedding Officiant

Its not only official clergymen who can officiate weddings. Any friend or family member is chosen by the couple for this role can actually officiate the wedding. While you can pick just about anyone, you would want someone of legal age, well-rounded, and able to give a good speech. This person should know the bride and groom well to a level where he/she is comfortable talking about their relationship.

Consider the speech you want them to give, the location, their availability, and also how welcome they would be to the idea of officiating at the wedding. It might not seem like much of a responsibility, but when wondering, how to ask a friend to officiate your wedding, I think theres another question to ponder. So, who can officiate a wedding?

Understanding Legal Intent And Civil Ceremonies

Your state will have specific laws and requirements about how a marriage license is to be signed. They will also have requirements for the wedding ceremony and what will constitute a legal marriage. It doesnt matter how large or small the ceremony is. As a wedding officiant, you have to make sure these requirements are met.

If you become a religious officiant, you will likely have specific religious guidelines to follow, too. In some cases, the requirements are as simple as asking the couple if they are sure they want to be married. If they provide verbal consent, youre good to go. In other states, there may be a bit more to it.

Its also important for the officiant to ensure the marriage license is filed properly with the county clerk. Sometimes, the couple will do this on their own. Other times, you will be responsible for filing the marriage license for the couple.

Step 1ask The Couple To Present The Texas Marriage License

We recommend that you ask this of the couple before the wedding. It would not be ideal for you to officiate the wedding only to find out afterwards that the couple left their marriage license at home. The coupe will probably have a lot on their plates leading up to the wedding. We suggest that you contact the couple the day before the wedding just to remind them to bring the marriage license to the ceremony.

Discuss What You Should Wear

All eyes will be on the coupleand also on the officiant who will be standing with them. “Plan on discussing what youll wear so there are no surprises or complaints. Even if the couple says, ‘dress any way you want,’ you need to think about your attire in the context of the role you are playing as the wedding ceremony officiantnot just a wedding guest,” Anakotta says. While you don’t want to clash with the wedding party, you also don’t want to appear overdressed , compared to the rest of the people in the ceremony photos. For all these reasons, make sure to have a frank discussion with the couple about the dress code.

Step : Return The Marriage License

DC Wedding Officiant

After the wedding ceremony, both copies of the marriage license must be signed by the officiant and both witnesses. One thing to note, especially for destination weddings, is to know the county you are marrying in as the officiant will need to fill that out on the marriage license.

Both copies of the marriage license must be returned to the Register of Deeds office from which it was obtained within ten days of the ceremony. You may return the marriage license in person or via mail by using the return envelope they provided – dont forget the stamp!

Typically, we will mail the marriage license for our clients the next day to ensure it arrives in time.

How To Determine What To Charge

How to become a successful Wedding Officiant

This is another popular question, but luckily, this is easy to figure out. Find out what others are charging in your area and price accordingly. A bit of advice: dont undervalue your services. It is tempting for new officiants to want to charge less due to lack of experience. This can actually backfire and some couples may not see your value if you price too low. There are couples who feel that officiants should not charge at all, and do not value us as a vendor. Dont forget to account for a rehearsal if you plan to attend. You may want to set a mileage perimeter and add travel fees for traveling out of your area.

How To Get Licensed To Officiate A Wedding

If you are completely committed to your friend or family member performing the wedding, then getting licensed is vital to a legal marriage. An officiant should be authorized to sign the marriage license. In essence, this individual will have to:

  • Find out the states requirements for getting licensed to officiate the wedding.
  • Follow these requirements to the tee. You might have to pay a fee and fill in some paperwork with the state. In other situations, you can pay a fee and get ordained with a church online.
  • After the paperwork find out what exactly needs to be done to make the marriage ceremony legal. This might be asking the couple if they wish to marry each other. Another aspect that cements the legality of the wedding is the signing of the marriage certificate. So, the wedding officiant need not forget this, and afterward, the certificate/license should be sent to the government issuer or license bureau.
  • Apply For A Marriage License

  • Find a North Carolina Register of Deeds Office.

  • You have to pick up the marriage license in person, so be sure to choose an office you can get to. Whether it be in Raleigh, Charlotte or Asheville, it doesnt matter as long as it is in North Carolina and you can get to it in person to pick up the marriage license.

  • Apply no more than 60 days before your wedding date as marriage licenses are invalid after that.

  • Most Asheville couples, whether locals or out-of-towners, apply for a marriage license at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office and pick it up when they arrive for their wedding weekend. Be sure to check the hours!

How To Get A Florida Marriage License

Licenses are issued by the County Clerk’s office, and will be picked up by the couple. As a minister, it’s your responsibility to know how marriage licenses work in Florida and its individual counties. For example, if the couple plans to get a Tampa marriage license, you should double-check if there are any rules specific to Hillsborough County. In Florida, the marriage license is valid for 60 days. There is a mandatory 3-day waiting period between the time it is picked up and when the ceremony can be legally performed . Remember, the signed marriage license must be returned to the issuing office within 10 days of the ceremony. If the couple is headed off on their honeymoon, you might offer to return it for them.

    You Must Obtain A Self

    Your wedding officiant

In order for your ceremony to be officiated by a friend, family, or someone who is otherwise NOT recognized by Pennsylvania as a religious or state official, you only need to do one thing. When applying for a marriage license at the Department of Court Records, request a self-uniting marriage license. Be prepared that this type of license may cost more than a traditional license in some counties, like Washington County. However, its as legally binding as a standard marriage license and valid in all Pennsylvania counties. The only difference is that instead of having a spot for the officiant to sign and make it official in the eyes of the county, there are lines for two witnesses. Get two John Hancocks and BOOM, youre married!
