Who Can Officiate A Wedding
Its not only official clergymen who can officiate weddings. Any friend or family member is chosen by the couple for this role can actually officiate the wedding. While you can pick just about anyone, you would want someone of legal age, well-rounded, and able to give a good speech. This person should know the bride and groom well to a level where he/she is comfortable talking about their relationship.
Consider the speech you want them to give, the location, their availability, and also how welcome they would be to the idea of officiating at the wedding. It might not seem like much of a responsibility, but when wondering, how to ask a friend to officiate your wedding, I think theres another question to ponder. So, who can officiate a wedding?
Understanding Legal Intent And Civil Ceremonies
Your state will have specific laws and requirements about how a marriage license is to be signed. They will also have requirements for the wedding ceremony and what will constitute a legal marriage. It doesnt matter how large or small the ceremony is. As a wedding officiant, you have to make sure these requirements are met.
If you become a religious officiant, you will likely have specific religious guidelines to follow, too. In some cases, the requirements are as simple as asking the couple if they are sure they want to be married. If they provide verbal consent, youre good to go. In other states, there may be a bit more to it.
Its also important for the officiant to ensure the marriage license is filed properly with the county clerk. Sometimes, the couple will do this on their own. Other times, you will be responsible for filing the marriage license for the couple.
Step 1ask The Couple To Present The Texas Marriage License
We recommend that you ask this of the couple before the wedding. It would not be ideal for you to officiate the wedding only to find out afterwards that the couple left their marriage license at home. The coupe will probably have a lot on their plates leading up to the wedding. We suggest that you contact the couple the day before the wedding just to remind them to bring the marriage license to the ceremony.

Discuss What You Should Wear
All eyes will be on the coupleand also on the officiant who will be standing with them. “Plan on discussing what youll wear so there are no surprises or complaints. Even if the couple says, ‘dress any way you want,’ you need to think about your attire in the context of the role you are playing as the wedding ceremony officiantnot just a wedding guest,” Anakotta says. While you don’t want to clash with the wedding party, you also don’t want to appear overdressed , compared to the rest of the people in the ceremony photos. For all these reasons, make sure to have a frank discussion with the couple about the dress code.
Step : Return The Marriage License
After the wedding ceremony, both copies of the marriage license must be signed by the officiant and both witnesses. One thing to note, especially for destination weddings, is to know the county you are marrying in as the officiant will need to fill that out on the marriage license.
Both copies of the marriage license must be returned to the Register of Deeds office from which it was obtained within ten days of the ceremony. You may return the marriage license in person or via mail by using the return envelope they provided – dont forget the stamp!
Typically, we will mail the marriage license for our clients the next day to ensure it arrives in time.

How To Determine What To Charge
This is another popular question, but luckily, this is easy to figure out. Find out what others are charging in your area and price accordingly. A bit of advice: dont undervalue your services. It is tempting for new officiants to want to charge less due to lack of experience. This can actually backfire and some couples may not see your value if you price too low. There are couples who feel that officiants should not charge at all, and do not value us as a vendor. Dont forget to account for a rehearsal if you plan to attend. You may want to set a mileage perimeter and add travel fees for traveling out of your area.

How To Get Licensed To Officiate A Wedding
If you are completely committed to your friend or family member performing the wedding, then getting licensed is vital to a legal marriage. An officiant should be authorized to sign the marriage license. In essence, this individual will have to:
Apply For A Marriage License
You have to pick up the marriage license in person, so be sure to choose an office you can get to. Whether it be in Raleigh, Charlotte or Asheville, it doesnt matter as long as it is in North Carolina and you can get to it in person to pick up the marriage license.
Apply no more than 60 days before your wedding date as marriage licenses are invalid after that.
Most Asheville couples, whether locals or out-of-towners, apply for a marriage license at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office and pick it up when they arrive for their wedding weekend. Be sure to check the hours!

How To Get A Florida Marriage License
Licenses are issued by the County Clerk’s office, and will be picked up by the couple. As a minister, it’s your responsibility to know how marriage licenses work in Florida and its individual counties. For example, if the couple plans to get a Tampa marriage license, you should double-check if there are any rules specific to Hillsborough County. In Florida, the marriage license is valid for 60 days. There is a mandatory 3-day waiting period between the time it is picked up and when the ceremony can be legally performed . Remember, the signed marriage license must be returned to the issuing office within 10 days of the ceremony. If the couple is headed off on their honeymoon, you might offer to return it for them.
You Must Obtain A Self
In order for your ceremony to be officiated by a friend, family, or someone who is otherwise NOT recognized by Pennsylvania as a religious or state official, you only need to do one thing. When applying for a marriage license at the Department of Court Records, request a self-uniting marriage license. Be prepared that this type of license may cost more than a traditional license in some counties, like Washington County. However, its as legally binding as a standard marriage license and valid in all Pennsylvania counties. The only difference is that instead of having a spot for the officiant to sign and make it official in the eyes of the county, there are lines for two witnesses. Get two John Hancocks and BOOM, youre married!

What Happens During A Typical Day At A Wedding Officiant Business
A wedding officiant spends most of the week marketing and speaking with potential clients. Many people choose to run their wedding officiant business on a part-time basis, and they only work an hour or two a day answering emails and speaking with clients. Wedding officiants usually spend a few hours at each wedding presiding over the ceremony. Some wedding officiant businesses choose to offer wedding planning services, so they spend much more of their time consulting with clients, caterers, florists, space managers, and other wedding-related businesses.
Can I Perform My Own Wedding
Self Solemnization, also known as a self-uniting marriage is one in which the couple are married without the presence of a third-party officiant. The couple can essentially perform the legal solemnization of their own marriage, which will be recognized as a legal marriage throughout all of The United States.

If you are eloping and there are no friends or family members present, you can ask your wedding planner and photographer to be your witnesses!

Do You Need Contracts For Wedding Officiant Services
Many officiants choose to have the couple sign a contract, and we strongly suggest you do so. Our Facebook group offers a few samples, but we suggest that you let your attorney review it. The contract will spell out who is responsible for what, and by when, which will help avoid any issues that may crop up in the future.

That said, please note that in some states there may be additional registration requirements beyond simply becoming a minister. Common Types Of Wedding Officiants
There are a few common types of wedding officiants. Some will require more training and education than others. The most common types include:
- Civil Officiants This type of wedding officiant can ensure the marriage is legal for civil weddings. They are usually found at the county clerks office or run their own business. Retired judges and public notaries are commonly civil officiants.
- Religious Officiants Ministers, priests, pastors, rabbis, or any other type of religious leader may be a religious officiant. They will likely perform religious wedding ceremonies and even counsel couples before they get married. This type of officiant may have some restrictions, depending on the religion they practice.
- Professional Officiants A professional officiant is the most common type that runs their own business. They may help you with the wedding planning and cater the ceremony to your tastes. In addition, they may perform secular and spiritual weddings.
Of course, there are also family or friend officiants. These types of officiants are not out to make money. Instead, they are trying to perform a ceremony one time for someone they love.
Does It Cost Money To Be Ordained
Again, this depends on the organization you go through. Some, like the Universal Life Church, ordain for free but charge a small fee for certificates of credentials. Others, like the American Fellowship Church, do charge varying prices for the ordination, based on what type of package or certificate you’d like to have. A quick tip: Before getting ordained, find out whether the ordination will be for life or for a limited time. If it’s for a limited time, find out if it costs anything to renew the ordination.
