Did The Celtics Use Wedding Rings

Tiffany Wedding Bands – Women’s Harmony Diamond Band and Classic Milgrain 3MM Band

In ancient times, the Celts viewed marriage as an equal contract between a man and a woman. That viewpoint opposed the widely held notion that a woman becomes a mans property after their wedding. So, the Celts used wedding rings to symbolize that contract during a wedding festival or ceremony. So, yes, the Celts did use wedding rings, and the Celtic ring styles strengthened the connection between couples and Celtic tradition.

History Of Irish Wedding Rings

In the early centuries, Celtic warriors wore a simple band made out of gold, silver or bronze. This type of wedding ring is known as a plain wedding ring. However, during the Middle Ages, the design became more ornate. Men began to wear a single ring which incorporated symbols of strength and power. These symbols included crosses, swords and shields. Womens celtic wedding bands usually consisted of a circle or oval shape with a cross inside it.

In the 16th century, the Tudor dynasty introduced new jewelry trends into Britain. One of these trends was the use of diamonds. As a result, diamond wedding rings became popular among wealthy brides. During this period, the Irish also adopted the trend. However, instead of using diamonds, they chose to incorporate pearls and other precious stones.

During the 17th century, Queen Elizabeth I banned the wearing of any kind of metal rings on the hands of men. She felt that the practice was too similar to the Catholic Churchs prohibition of marriage without a priest present. In addition, she thought that metal rings could be dangerous if worn by soldiers.

However, the ban did not apply to women. Thus, they continued to wear their wedding bands. After the ban, men started wearing plain wedding rings again.

What Is The Story Behind The Claddagh Ring

The first tale involves a certain Richard Joyce. He set sail from Galway for the West Indies only to be captured by Algerian pirates and sold into slavery to a Moorish goldsmith. Joyce toiled away for fourteen-years under the tutelage of his master. During this time he was to become an expert craftsman.

He was set free in 1689 after William III of England demanded the release of British subjects. The goldsmith was sorry to see Joyce leave so he offered his daughter and half of his riches to induce Joyce to stay. Joyce refused.

Returning home to Galway, Joyce was overjoyed to find that his one true love was still waiting for him. He created the Claddagh ring to honour his everlasting love and presented it to her as a marriage ring. Joyce went on to live a healthy and happy life in Galway and became a successful goldsmith.
