Do Wedding Vows Say Obey

Ruth 1:16

For many couples getting married today, the word “obey” is often omitted from the exchange. However, it was part of the traditional wedding vows, stemming from Ephesians 5:21-24, according to Pushkine. It reads: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”She also says the word “obey” does not appear in Catholic wedding vows, although we are taught to think so. In fact, its been removed from most historical texts, starting as In 1928, with the womens suffragist movement. It was then that “obey” began to be replaced with “love and cherish”. However, if you want to keep this for your own wedding, it can be positive for some females who see the value in the promise. Throughout time, the use of the word ‘obey has had negative connotations, however, many women actually look at the word as submission of free will, Pushkine continues. There are some women who choose to use the word as a pledge to respect their husbands wishes. In their minds, it is not a sign of weakness at all, but rather a full declaration of the mutual love and unconditional support as a faithful wife they are offering.

Wedding Vows Are Sacred Vows

“I, John take thee Mary to be my wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till in death we part, and with this ring I thee wed, and with my body I thee honor, and pledge my faithfulness.”

Every day thousands of couples stand before a preacher, a judge or some justice of the peace and exchange wedding vows. On many occasions I have watched a groom nervously fidget with his tie as the music played and as he waited for the love of his life to make her appearance and be escorted down the aisle by her father. When the music changed to the wedding processional, the entire audience stood and watched a beautiful young woman walk down the aisle. There, in the presence of God and their witnesses another young couple exchanged vows and were bound together in marriage.

Many of these couples will break their vows within a matter of weeks . Some couples do not take their vows seriously and thus pay little attention to the words they speak at their wedding. Recently I had a man ask me for a copy of the wedding vowshe said he was so nervous when he got married he couldn’t recall exactly what he had promised to do!

In this article I would like to examine the vows preachers usually have couples exchange on the day of their wedding.

How Can Someone Figure Out The Best Wedding Vows For Them

If you are passionate about stringing together sentences that depict exactly how you feel about your partner, then go for it. But if youd rather take some of the stress off, consider going the traditional wedding vow route, and making small edits as you both feel are necessary. Couples are writing their own rules now. Using preset vows is now usually reserved for Catholic weddings in the church, where you are not allowed to recite your own vows. But even in those circumstances, the couple often find a way to say their own vows: perhaps at the rehearsal dinner or the reception, Pushkine adds. Its up to you!

Bible Verses For Your Wife

While general wedding and marriage scriptures often offer encouraging sentiments, you may be looking for a verse that speaks more specifically to your wife or fiancée. Despite the changes the world has seen since the Bible was written about 2,000 years ago, there are many verses with sentiments that still feel resonant today.

If you’re in the midst of crafting your wedding program but having a hard time selecting passages that speak to the modern nature of your partnership, Rev. Birchfield advises working in tandem with your officiant. For couples who want to honor their faith, while avoiding “wives submit to your own husbands” and related verbiage, Rev. Birchfield suggests “that these couples hire an experienced minister who may have a background in ‘chaplaincy’ where they have worked in pluralistic places such as the military, hospitals and other corporate environments as opposed to exclusively a church. Chaplaincy seeks to motivate and initiate meaningful use of each individual’s beliefs and attitudes into the ceremony. A chaplain serves as a counselor and guide to the psycho-spiritual needs between the couple and their guests for the ultimate ceremonial experience while still being sincere to their own convictions.”
