Many Steps Go Into Cleaning And Preserving Your Gown

Inspection This is key to good gown cleaning. We inspect for loose beads and trim. We also check for open seams and tears. We often find torn bustle ties. We will identify and discuss our findings with you, so you are comfortable with what we are going to do with your precious gown.

Hand Cleaning We carefully hand treat, and clean every gown with special solutions giving protection to trims, lace and embroidery. Every gown is then rinsed individually in pure environmentally safe solutions.

Finishing After cleaning we steam and press every gown so it is just like before your wedding.

Final Inspection and Preservation We complete a detailed final inspection and pack your your gown in a 100% acid free museum quality preservation chest. This final inspection is always performed by Mitch or Sandy Jacobs, the owners of Drake Cleaners and A Better Fit Alterations.

Are There Wedding Dress Cleaning And Preservation Services Near Me

Before choosing a cleaner or preservationist, do a little local detective work. You’ll need to investigate where to take your gown a few weeks before the wedding. That way, if your dress is stained badly or damaged on your wedding day, a family or bridal party member can drop it off right away while you’re on your honeymoon getaway. Ask friends and family, bridal shops or your wedding consultant for referrals.

Though many dry cleaners claim to clean wedding gowns, most are not specialists. Unless the dry cleaner processes more than 100 wedding gowns a year, consider going to a nearby professional gown preservationist with a noted track record instead.

Struggling to find somebody near you ? To make things super-easy and convenient, some companies are now offering mail-away services. In fact, we partnered up with an amazing wedding dress preservation service called Wedding Dress Preservation by The Knot. It will send you a mailing kit with a prepaid shipping label and all the instructions you need, then have your garment back to you within four to six weeks. It even includes insurance on your wedding dress.

The goal is for your wedding dress to be returned looking as fresh and new as possible. A dress that undergoes wedding gown cleaning will likely come back to you steamed and pressed . A preserved wedding gown will arrive in a protective package that displays the finished product.

The correct packaging materials are important in guaranteeing the life of your gown. And all storage materials should be clean and completely acid-free. After the cleaning process, your preservationist will wrap your dress in acid-free paper or muslin, then place it in an acid-free or pH-neutral box, which allows the gown to breathe and adjust with changing temperatures. Some boxes feature a viewing window: a clear panel designed to see the gown without opening the box. If your box features a window, look for acetate rather than plastic, and keep the box out of direct light, which can yellow the fabric over time. Some companies utilize boxes with Coroplast, a specially designed plastic known for its durability.

Restoration Work Is One Of Jims Specialties

In his own words Nothing makes me happier than taking a gown that is totally not wearable and making it look like new. By utilizing years of training and experience Jim puts his knowledge of bleaches to work. Most folks think there is one type of bleach, chlorine bleach such as Clorox but there are many types of bleaches that are much gentler on fabrics such as sodium percarbonate and sodium perborate. These bleaches along with special German wet cleaning chemistry and equipment allows us to restore most gowns to 95% new.

If the gown is to be preserved, Daisy invites you to come and inspect the gown prior to packaging. Daisy uses museum archival quality boxes which have a 200 year life expectancy . These boxes are acid neutral along with the tissue used to stuff the gown. The gown is placed in an unbleached muslin bag which protects the box from dust as well as allowing the gown to breathe.

During storage it is recommended to keep your gown in a cool dry place away from animals and children. A dry basement or under a bed is best. Attics are typically not a good place as the temperature typically can reach over 100 degrees.

Don’t Forget Your Shoes And Bouquet

Wedding Dress Cleaning & Preservation

By taking the appropriate steps, you can preserve both your shoes and bouquet alongside your gown. For cloth shoes, use a gentle cloth and sponge and lightly scrub your shoes with a mild detergent. For leather shoes, give them a good polish. If you really did a number on your shoes, you can take them to a dry cleaner. After your shoes are clean, wrap them in white tissue and place them in a box.

Depending on the type of material your shoes are, you may be able to include them with your dress in the preservation box. Talk with your preservationist to see whether this is possible. For bridal bouquets, you can press, hang, coat the flowers in wax, or use epoxy resin to preserve the blooms.

What Is Wedding Gown Cleaning And Preservation

Your big day has come and gonewhat do you do with your wedding gown now? Brides have a number of options they can choose from regarding what to do with their dresses. Some donate or sell their gown so it can be loved a second time around by a new bride-to-be. Others re-envision what they wore down the aisle into new cocktail attire. And still, others decide to trash their bridal wear through a once-in-a-lifetime photoshoot. However, most popularly, brides look to clean and preserve their dress for future generations.

Were big fans of that last option.

What is wedding gown cleaning and preservation?

Wedding gown cleaning and preservation is a more specialized approach in comparison to standard dry cleaning. The process is laborious and requires even more astute attention to detail. A dress is first inspected for both visible and invisible stains. You may be asking, Waitthere are stains you cant see? And the short answer is yes. Spills from light-colored, sugary substances like champagne will oxidize over time if left untreated, resulting in yellow or brown stains that arent easily removed.

Following an inspection, a gown undergoes careful cleaning and is then folded with acid-free tissue, wrapped in muslin, and placed in an archival preservation chest.

How Can I Prepare My Dress For Cleaning And Preservation

You can usually wait until after the honeymoon to take your dress to a preservationist, but remember it’s better to take your gown in while the stains are fresh and not set in . “The longer you delay, the less likely all stains can be removed, and if you wait years, your gown will need restoration rather than just cleaning,” Conant warns.

Before sending your wedding dress to be cleaned and preserved, there are a few steps you need to take to maintain the integrity of your gown. First, don’t wrap your dress in plastic. This can seal in off gassing vapors and trap moisture, inviting mold and mildew. Don’t hang your dress on an ordinary wood or wire hangerthe weight of the dress will stretch and distort the weave of the fabric. Try a plastic or padded hanger instead. And definitely don’t try to clean the stains yourselfyou risk setting them in the fabric. Chances are, your service will provide other instructions specific to their needs.

How Can I Make Sure My Dress Is In Good Hands

Wedding Gown Preservation Kit only $149 I need to get this done ...

“I always tell my brides to ask a lot of questions. You want to make sure that the person taking care of your gown pays attention to detail and knows fabrics as well as how gowns are constructed,” says Karen Jean-Aimee of Madame Paulette, a luxury cleaning and restoration service. Ask about the type of cleaning method used, do the cleaners hand clean and if they will pretreat any stains and soiled areas. Some companies, including Wedding Dress Preservation by The Knot, go so far as to photograph, measure, carefully remove and inventory ultra-delicate embellishments before cleaning to really prevent damage. Then, they’ll meticulously reinstall them.

Also, find out if the company does the work on location or if it ships gowns elsewhere to be cleaned and packaged. Don’t rule a company out if it doesn’t work in-house, especially if they have good reviews. It’s just good to know where your dress will be in case you want to check in.

Sending your gown away for treatment? You’ll worry less if you know it’s insured during transit and service. Wedding Dress Preservation by The Knot includes $1,000 of shipping insurance with its Cleaning and Preservation kit. You can also add additional coverage for $15 per $500 of value. In addition, the company offers shipment tracking so you’ll never be up all night wondering where your gown is.

Invisible Stains Might Be Lurking On Your Wedding Gown

“Oddly, the most dangerous spills are the ones you cannot see,” says expert Sally Conant. “White wine and other things dry clear, and these latent stains contain sugar that caramelizes over time into dark brown stains that ordinary dry cleaning cannot remove. You may think your gown is fine, but in six months or more, the latent stain becomes pale yellow and then darkens as it ages. Heat accelerates the process.”

Meet the Expert

Sally Conant is the Executive Director of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists.

Professional cleaners and preservationists are trained to spot the unseen. They’ll be able to deal with any stains on your wedding gown, from the invisible to the visible. Did the bottom of your dress get dirty from your picture-perfect shots in a garden? Did someone slosh red wine on it during the reception? Did an overzealous aunt smudge her foundation on it when she came in for a hug? They’ll create a treatment plan for each type of stain.

Wedding Dress Preservation Vs Standard Dry Cleaning

Wedding Gown Restoration & Preservation Indianapolis, Fishers, Carmel, Greenwood – Classic Cleaners

Unlike one-size-fits-all dry-cleaning, wedding gown preservation begins with an experienced specialist’s assessment. The specialist creates a unique treatment plan according to your dress fabric, stitching, and details, in addition to analyzing stains along the hem and entire dress.

There are, however, some dry cleaners who also offer specialized wedding dress cleaning. You can use them, but make sure to vet their process first. Specifically, you’ll want to find a dry cleaner who uses a solvent gentle and pure enough for a gown. Other solvents used for regular dry cleaning might contain impurities that can redeposit onto clothing and leave your wedding dress with a strange smell. Wedding dress cleaning and preservation should only be done with dry cleaners who specialize in cleaning gowns.

Before committing to any cleaner or preservationist, thoroughly research their policies. You want someone who guarantees they won’t do any damage during the preservation. And in the event that any damage is done, look for a guarantee that the cost of the dress will be refunded. Furthermore, find out how long they guarantee that the wedding dress will remain pristine after their preservation.
