What Is Kate Middleton’s Engagement Ring
It is a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire, that is surrounded by 14 diamonds, and set in 18-karat white gold.
According to Vogue, it is based on a brooch that Prince Albert asked the jeweller Garrard to create for his future wife, Queen Victoria, back in 1840.
At some point, this brooch belonged to the late Queen – and it inspired King Charles when choosing an engagement ring for Princess Diana in 1981.
Sara Prentice, Garrard’s creative director, told the magazine that he had initially intended to purchase something, but “he actually ended up setting a sapphire cluster ring for her”.

Who Inherited Princess Diana’s Sapphire Ring
Prince William proposed to Princess Kate with his late mother Princess Diana’s iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which was largely thought to have been inherited by Prince Harry.
Now, the Duke of Sussex has set the record straight regarding the heartfelt story that he handed the jewel to his older brother ahead of his proposal in Kenya in 2010.
In his memoir Spare, which was released in Spain on Thursday, the royal admitted the entire story was “nonsense” he had not inherited his mother’s ring, and therefore, there was no tender moment when Harry handed it over to William in a selfless gesture that acknowledged his true love with Kate.
William had asked for the sapphire after their mother died in a car crash in France in 1997, which Harry did not object to.
Princess Diana’s ring was inherited by Prince William, not Prince Harry
Harry explained that the first time he was aware that William and Kate were engaged was when he had returned to the UK and Buckingham Palace made the announcement in November 2010. He revealed that the brothers had spent time together during a trip to Lesotho in June, shortly before the royal proposed, but William had not mentioned his plans to get down on one knee.

Kate Middletons Engagement Ring
In October 2010 Prince William and Catherine Middleton became the talk of the world when, after 8 years of dating, Will finally popped the big question! In a romantic little cabin in Kenya, hidden away 10,500ft in the mountains, the future King of England proposed to his bride.
Prince William presented Kate with his late Mothers engagement ring. A huge 18 carat sapphire and diamond ring. The stunning 12 carat oval sapphire, surrounded by 14 dazzling diamonds totalling a whopping 6 carats, was picked out by Lady Diana Spencer as her own engagement ring in 1981, following Prince Charless proposal. The Ceylon Sapphire and solitaire diamonds are set in 18 carat white gold.
Following Dianas death in 1997 the ring was locked in a secure safe to which only Prince William and his younger brother, Prince Harry, had access.
It was reported that Dianas choice of engagement ring caused quite a stir among the Royals. Disparaging remarks were made, as her ring of choice was not bespoke and could, as a result, be bought by anyone that had the funds available. Not having a ring custom made was frowned upon. Reports of the original cost of the ring vary, but most agreed it cost between £28,000 and £30,000 at the time, a price tag not to be scoffed at!
Shortly after Will and Kates engagement was announced, jewellers reported sky rocketing sales of sapphire rings and unprecedented volumes of enquiries for replicas of Kates ring.

The Duchess Of Cambridge Can Reverse The Changes
Prince Williamproposed to Kate Middleton with a very sentimental engagement ring that belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana, so many fans may be questioning why the Duchess of Cambridge would risk making changes to the iconic rock.
READ: Why Kate Middleton’s iconic engagement ring was not given to Meghan Markle
It is reported that Duchess Kate had to have the large sapphire and diamond ring resized after William popped the question in Kenya because the original design by Garrard was a little too big. Instead of breaking and resoldering the band itself, jeweller G. Collins and Sons added small platinum beads inside the band to reduce its diameter, which is why the secret alteration has not been visible from the exterior.

And the best part? Not only does the smaller band allow Kate to wear her engagement ring to almost all events, but the changes can easily be reversed.
“It would be easier to think that by adding extra platinum, or by working on something, we increase or decrease its value, however….this item of jewellery is truly unique in the fact that its provenance has increased its true value considerably, and so these minor alterations won’t truly affect the price in any way,” explained diamond expert Anthony French at Austen & Blake.
“Especially with the small cosmetic change being something that can also be removed, and the ring put back to its ‘original’ state if need be,” he added.

Does Kate Middleton Have Princess Dianas Ring
Most of you know that before it became Kate Middleton’s engagement ring, it was actually Princess Diana’s. As fans of The Crown will attest, she got engaged to Prince Charles in February 1981, and chose the ring herself, instead of picking one from the Queen’s collection.
It was a rather unusual move, because it wasn’t even a custom design, in fact anyone could’ve walked into the then crown jeweller Garrard and bought the exact same design themselves. It consisted of a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds and set in 18-karat white gold.
However there was a royal nod in the design itself, as it was inspired by a brooch Queen Victoria wore on her wedding day in 1840, which was her ‘something blue’ and a gift from Prince Albert.
After Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced in 1996, it is unclear whether she kept the ring or gave it back, however we do know it was passed onto her sons after she died.
According to her former butler Paul Burrell, Harry originally chose the ring for himself. He said in the Amazon documentary The Diana Story, ‘ “I remember when I held mummy’s hand when I was a small boy and that ring always hurt me because it was so big. So I went to the safe and gave Harry Dianas engagement ring.’
Later on though, Harry chose to give it to his brother William. ‘Harry said to him: “Wouldnt it be fitting if she had mummys ring? Then one day that ring will be sat on the throne of England”‘ recalls Burrell.

How Much Is Kate Middletons Ring Worth
At the time of Princess Diana’s engagement in the early 80s, the ring cost £28,000.
We spoke to Maxwell Stone, the Creative Director at Steven Stone Jewellers , who said: “Due to inflation and its legacy, wed estimate the value of Kates ring to be around £390,000 today – however in 10 years time its likely this ring will be worth over £500,000, thanks to its history, beauty, and priceless legacy.”
Did Kate Middleton Change Her Engagement Ring
While she didn’t change the design of the ring, she did reportedly add platinum beads to the inside of the band so it would sit more snuggly on her finger, as it was slightly too big. Princess Diana however had altered the ring slightly, adding more prongs to the frame of the central stone .
Fans did notice that in 2020 she started wearing her engagement ring less, but this is thought to be due to the pandemic. Washing your hands often can’t be easy with such a chunky ring, and harsh soaps could cause damage to it.

Does Kate Wear An Eternity Ring
Eagle-eyed royal fans might have noticed that Kate typically layers not one but three rings on her wedding finger. In addition to the gold band and her engagement sapphire, the Duchess now wears an eternity ring, specifically the Eclipse diamond eternity ring, made from 18 carat white gold, by Annoushka.
Kate Middleton Wedding Ring
Like most royal brides since the Queen Mother, including the Queen and Meghan Markle, Duchess Catherine’s wedding ring was forged from a nugget of rare Welsh gold. In 1923, the royal family obtained a large nugget of gold from the Clogau St. David’s Gold Mine in Bontddu, North Wales, to make the Queen Mother’s wedding ring.
That same nugget was used for the rings of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne and Princess Diana, however not much was left of it after that.
But fear not, the British Royal Legion came to the rescue by gifting Queen Elizabeth with a second nugget in the 1980s, which has been used for the wedding rings for Fergie, the Countess of Wessex, Camilla, Meghan and Kate.
