How Quickly Can You Get Married In Texas
Bring Patience: There is a 72 hour mandatory waiting period on all marriage licenses. This waiting period may be waived by completion of the voluntary premarital class. Your marriage license remains valid for 90 days after issue. You have 30 days after the ceremony to return the license to the county clerk.

State law authorizes the following people to conduct a marriage ceremony:
- a licensed or ordained Christian minister or priest
- a Jewish rabbi
- an officer of a religious organization authorized to conduct marriage ceremonies
- justices/judges/magistrates/associate judges of:

- the Texas Supreme Court, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Texas Courts of Appeals
- Texas district, county, probate, and justice of the peace courts

They’ll need to go through the ordination process and be prepared on your wedding day. You’ll also want to ask someone who feels comfortable speaking in front of crowds, since, along with you and your future spouse, they will be the center of attention during your ceremony.
Conducting The Marriage Ceremony
Texas law does not provide many details about the actual marriage ceremony and how it may be conducted. Instead of regulating what is said or done in a ceremony, the law focuses on time periods within which certain things must be done.
Once a couple obtains a , the law says the following about the ceremony itself:
- There is a 72-hour waiting period between the issuance of a marriage license and the ceremony, with certain exceptions. Section 2.204.
- A marriage license expires if a ceremony isn’t conducted before the 90th day after the license was issued. Section 2.201.
- The officiant must determine whether the license has expired and is prohibited from conducting a ceremony if it is expired. Section 2.207.
- A guide created for county clerks by the Department of State Health Services in 2015 on the best practices to use when issuing marriage licenses. What Is The Common Salary Of A Wedding Officiant
If you just become a wedding officiant for one wedding, you probably wont care much about the salary. Typically, a wedding officiant will work a different type of job. For example, you might be a judge, clergy member, or court clerk. Officiating weddings is often a part of your job, but not your main job.
As a judge, you can earn more than $124K per year, while clergy members often earn around $53K per year. Court clerks earn a salary of around $43K per year. Often, officiating weddings are considered extra and might allow you to make more money on the side.
Those deciding to be just a wedding officiant as their career will often go into business for themselves. Some marry as many as 500 couples per year.

How To Perform A Wedding In Tarrant County

Penalties For Officiant Violations
In Texas, knowingly conducting an illegal marriage is a violation of the Texas Family Code. When a marriage is deemed illegitimate, it could potentially be annulled. However, under Texas law, all marriages are assumed to be legitimate as long as they are conducted in good faith and will remain legitimate unless they are challenged and found to be fraudulent.
Officiants can face penalties for specific failures to comply with Texas law. These include:
- Failure to file a signed marriage license within 30 days of conducting a wedding ceremony can result in a $500 fine.
- Knowingly performing an illegal marriage, such as one involving a minor without parental approval or one involving an individual committing bigamy, is a 3rd-degree felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
- Conducting a wedding without being authorized to do so is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.
Additionally, an officiant may not perform a marriage if the couples marriage license has expired or if their 72-hour waiting period after receiving the license has not yet passed.
