Can I Give Wedding Gifts That Arent On The Registry
About to Wed couples come up with wedding registry ideas that suit their needs, fit their lifestyle, and are valuable to them. As such, if they are out of your budget range, you can get the wedding gifts, not on the registry. But whatever you get for them should align with their ideas, so that the couple will be able to use the gift.
If you have a very close relationship, you will know their tastes and the things they would love. If youre absolutely certain, you can buy them something not on the registry and it will be a hit!
How Much Should You Spend
That all depends on whether the gift is off the registry, an experience, or cash. Upon consulting the experts, a wedding gift should range from $75 to $750but most agree that $300+ is the sweet spot.
“It used to be that you’d spend approximately what you expected your meal to cost,” explains celebrity and luxury event planner “but I think that’s over.” That adage stemmed from a time where weddings were far more formulaic and centered around one main dinner reception. Now, couples are creating experiences for their guests that include multi-event weekends, interactive entertainment, far-flung destinations, welcome bags, favors, and moreand those gestures merit a token larger than the cost of a catered meal.”
“At minimum, a gift should be $75 to $100 if you are purchasing something off the couple’s registry,” explains Hugh Howser of H Three Events. “That’s the lowest ticket price of a high-end item on an average registry. Most registries now pool money for you, and so if you can’t spend much more, you can at least contribute to something larger.”
“If you’re a very close friend of the couple, it would be typical that you would spend more on that person same would apply if you were invited with a guest,” explains Lynn Easton of Easton Events.
When in doubt, check the registry. “It’s a good gauge of what the couple expects to receive,” Hamilton says. “But, if youre planning to give cashup the ante a bit.”

Try not to spread the budget thinly across too many areas, or it can begin to feel like a cheap event.
We show you how to do this in our post How to Plan a Wedding Under $5,000, we also provide free budget planning spreadsheets for each focus area .

If I Have A Plus One: How Much Should A Couple Spend On A Wedding Gift
You are not under oath to bear any extra gifts if you attend a wedding with a date or group of friends. But if you have a close relationship with the couple, you are morally bound to come with a gift double the cost or a bit over one adult head. This is to show support to the couple and pay for the extra plate of food.
As such, really close friends with a plus one should spend about $180 $250. For others $80 $160 is fine.
How Wedding Costs Have Changed Over Time
Aside from 2020, there have been more than 2 million marriages every year since 2000. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of marriages fell to 1.3 million in 2020 a year-over-year drop of 37%. Despite this drop, a per-wedding cost that continued to exceed $20,000 coupled with high numbers of people who still went forward with their planned weddings meant people still spent more than $25 billion on weddings.
ValuePenguin estimates that Americans spent a yearly average of $50 billion on weddings from 2015 to 2020.
Given the unprecedented effects that 2020 had on the wedding industry even though earnings were high it’s likely that the cost of weddings in the rest of 2021 will resemble the more conventional cost of weddings in 2019. The average cost of a wedding that year was 18% higher than it was in 2020.

Other Miscellaneous Expenses We Have Not Figured Out
There are other expenses we still havent finalized.
We will likely do some sort of bouquet for walking down the aisle, and we are still discussing whether we want centerpieces on the table or any other flowers. My friends mom is in the flower business, so I know she could help us select something great. We just havent looked into what is available or the cost. I am told it could be a few hundred dollars to anything you can imagine.
We probably need to rent an additional bathroom or two. The venue has one bathroom and having been to weddings in the past, well need at least an additional bathroom for that many people. Im still looking into costs, but it looks like a couple of hundred dollars.
This is starting to feel like Costco, but instead of everything being $10-12, everything is a couple of hundred dollars.
We may purchase beer and will be buying non-alcoholic drinks, which will likely be you guessed it a few hundred dollars.
We are not sending formal invitations. Instead, we are sending a virtual save the date and RSVP through email. Invitations felt like a ton of work and an extra cost that didnt seem worthwhile.
Since we are living in Madison, WI instead of Seattle, but are getting married in Seattle, well also pay for our flights, rental car, and a place to stay. We havent looked at flight prices, rental cars, or places to stay in-depth, but this will likely be another $1,000-$1,500 for the two of us.
How Much Does A Wedding Cost
The average wedding cost of a wedding is over $30K, but its important to bear in mind that averages dont show you a complete picture. A few big-budget weddings can easily skew a national average to appear higher than what most couples are actually spending. For example, 32.85% of Zola couples share that they spent between $10,000 and $24,999 on their wedding while just 5% spent $100,000 or more. Treat the average cost as a helpful gauge of what to potentially expect, not an obligation of what you have to spend on your wedding.

Dont Let The Numbers Fool You
The $19,000 average is steep and thats lower than in recent years, due to smaller-than-normal celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic. But remember that averages dont tell the whole story. Experts point out that they can easily be skewed.
One $1 million wedding can bring up the average of thousands of $10,000 weddings, says Jessica Bishop, wedding expert and founder of the Budget Savvy Bride.
So treat this data as a benchmark, not an expectation. And you don’t have to spring for all the items on the list. For example, you might decide to skip favors and hook your smartphone up to a speaker system instead of hiring a band or DJ.
How To Draw Up A Wedding Budget Spreadsheet
Now is the time to draw up your wedding budget and, importantly, make a commitment together to stick to it.
If you think that your parents might want to give you money for the wedding, then it is a good idea to ask them how much early on before starting the wedding process.
- HMRC allows each parent or step-parent to gift up to £5000 for their childs wedding free from inheritance tax
- Grandparents and great grandparents can also give up to £2,500 and any other person can each gift up to £1,000 to lower the cost of a wedding.
Whether you have the Bank of Mum & Dad or other family members to help or not, it is best to start saving as soon as possible for your big day.
Lower the cost of a wedding by thinking about areas of your life where you can both make cut backs.
A budget wedding planner is a good place to start. Squirrel away the money you save in an account earmarked for your special day.

Should You Borrow Money To Purchase An Engagement Ring
If you can’t afford a ring right now, the best thing would be to wait. Put money aside each month until you can buy the ring in cash. But that might not be possible, especially when you have other loans to deal with. Saving up what you need could take a year or more.
We get it that you might not want to wait to propose. In that case, you could consider getting a cheaper ring, financing the ring or putting it on a credit card. But be careful: financing doesn’t mean you should pick the largest diamond you can charge. You still need to choose one that fits within your budget.
- The more cash you can bring to the table upfront, the better. If you must borrow the rest, develop a pay-off plan .
What about borrowing the money from a family member?
Average Cost Of A Wedding By Year
The average cost of a wedding has changed a lot in recent years. While couples spent an average of $28,000 in 2019, the average spending plummeted in 2020.
The pandemic decreased the average cost of weddings in 2020 to $19,000, with a limited number of guests, and an overall change in how weddings took place, though wedding costs have been dropping in recent years.
Here’s what couples have spent in recent years on their weddings, according to The Knot.
|Wedding day transportation||$800|
While some of these costs are essential, others aren’t. You’ll need an officiant to get married, but you may not need to hire a wedding planner for $1,500, nor spend a full $2,000 on flowers.
While these things compose the average cost, not every couple needs every item on the list. If you’re looking to save some on your wedding costs, opting for more affordable wedding venues and doing some of the planning yourself could be a good way to cut costs.
