“It used to be that you’d spend approximately what you expected your meal to cost,” explains celebrity and luxury event planner “but I think that’s over.” That adage stemmed from a time where weddings were far more formulaic and centered around one main dinner reception. Now, couples are creating experiences for their guests that include multi-event weekends, interactive entertainment, far-flung destinations, welcome bags, favors, and moreand those gestures merit a token larger than the cost of a catered meal.”
“At minimum, a gift should be $75 to $100 if you are purchasing something off the couple’s registry,” explains Hugh Howser of H Three Events. “That’s the lowest ticket price of a high-end item on an average registry. Most registries now pool money for you, and so if you can’t spend much more, you can at least contribute to something larger.”
“If you’re a very close friend of the couple, it would be typical that you would spend more on that person same would apply if you were invited with a guest,” explains Lynn Easton of Easton Events.
When in doubt, check the registry. “It’s a good gauge of what the couple expects to receive,” Hamilton says. “But, if youre planning to give cashup the ante a bit.”

If I Have A Plus One: How Much Should A Couple Spend On A Wedding Gift

But if you have a close relationship with the couple, you are morally bound to come with a gift double the cost or a bit over one adult head. Other Miscellaneous Expenses We Have Not Figured Out
There are other expenses we still havent finalized.
We will likely do some sort of bouquet for walking down the aisle, and we are still discussing whether we want centerpieces on the table or any other flowers. My friends mom is in the flower business, so I know she could help us select something great. We just havent looked into what is available or the cost. We are not sending formal invitations. Instead, we are sending a virtual save the date and RSVP through email. Invitations felt like a ton of work and an extra cost that didnt seem worthwhile.
Since we are living in Madison, WI instead of Seattle, but are getting married in Seattle, well also pay for our flights, rental car, and a place to stay. We havent looked at flight prices, rental cars, or places to stay in-depth, but this will likely be another $1,000-$1,500 for the two of us.

The $19,000 average is steep and thats lower than in recent years, due to smaller-than-normal celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic. But remember that averages dont tell the whole story. Experts point out that they can easily be skewed.
One $1 million wedding can bring up the average of thousands of $10,000 weddings, says Jessica Bishop, wedding expert and founder of the Budget Savvy Bride.
So treat this data as a benchmark, not an expectation. And you don’t have to spring for all the items on the list. For example, you might decide to skip favors and hook your smartphone up to a speaker system instead of hiring a band or DJ.

If you can’t afford a ring right now, the best thing would be to wait. Put money aside each month until you can buy the ring in cash. But that might not be possible, especially when you have other loans to deal with. Saving up what you need could take a year or more.
