Your wedding at Costa Rica cost can range dramatically.
For starters, its important to determine your budget. Approximately how many people will be attending your wedding? How about your Costa Rican wedding style? As we mentioned, all-inclusive wedding venues will typically be more fuss-free than DIY wedding venues like our own but the cost usually reflects that.
However, just like the cost of living in Costa Rica, on average a Costa Rican wedding is much more affordable than one held in North America. In Costa Rica, a wedding typically hovers around $200-$400USD per person while in the States basic weddings average a total of $33,000 USD.
Our DIY Costa Rican wedding cost us only $11,000, but as mentioned before it came with a lot of hard work and a lot of stress. We think that a budget of $15,000-20,000 for a 40-50 person wedding is the sweet spot for someone looking for an enjoyable and down to earth wedding celebration in Costa Rica.

Lets discuss numbers. Now, when I give these #s Im talking about the wedding day budget. This includes things like the venue rental, officiant, passed appetizers during cocktail hour, dinner, cake, an open bar , musicians, flowers, and event rentals like lounge setups, dining chairs, tables, and seating.
What does the wedding day budget NOT include? Your dress, hotel, flight, hair and makeup, gifts for the wedding party, you get the idea
As an absolute minimum, youve gotta budget $250 per person.
I like to keep it real though and Im all about being transparent, so lets be realistic because this is a big decision. You should really aim for $500 per person, because what is the point in making your friends and family fly alllll the way down to Costa Rica just to give them a so-so wedding. At a destination wedding, the venue, the food, the music, the floral and decor need to be totally on point because you did all that hard work for a year+ just to have your guests feel underwhelmed.
But lets get REALLY real, you know those epic inspiration images youve been pinning? You need $1,000-2,000+ per person to achieve that look.
Im so sorry to break the bad news to you. Pinterest is unfortunately flooded with unrealistic images of styled shoots and million dollar weddings.

Costa Rica Wedding Tips And Logistics
As you daydream about your Costa Rican wedding, lets make sure your fantasies dont dissolve by having to figure out the process of acquiring a marriage license. Luckily, Costa Rica makes it pretty simple for foreigners to tie the knot in their enchanted borders, even allowing couples to have civil wedding ceremonies that are legal in their home country.
Here are the musts for having a wedding in Costa Rica that pleases the legal Gods:
- An attorney to officiate the ceremony
- Copies of your passports, birth certificates, names of your parents, and information about previous marriages
- Two witnesses that you are not related to these witnesses will have to provide their passports to the officiant before the ceremony
Once youve sealed the ceremony with a kiss, your attorney/officiant will register your marriage with Costa Ricas National Registry. The National Registry will then issue a marriage certificate within 4 to 6 weeks. After the marriage certificate has been received, your attorney will have it translated to English by an official translator, authenticated by the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and authenticated by your home countrys Embassy in Costa Rica.
All steps and services included, youre looking to spend about $1,500 to $2,000 to be legally wed in Costa Rica. With that said, many couples choose to skip this step by getting a marriage certificate in their home country before or after their ceremony in Costa Rica.
