What Is An Emerald Cut Ring Anyway

Not to get ahead of ourselves, if youre not quite sure what an emerald cut gemstone is, lets cover some of those basics. An emerald cut is a rectangular shaped diamond or gemstone with clipped corners, meaning its four sharp points have been cut diagonally so its like a stretched out octagon. Instead of radiating facets like a brilliant cut stone, emerald cuts are what we refer to as step cuts with long, rectangular, concentric facets that give them a sort of hall-of-mirrors look. While this shape has been around for ages, it really took off in the early 20th century with the rise of the geometry-heavy Art Deco style and hasnt lost its luster since.

How To Match A Wedding Band To Your Engagement Ring

Once your perfect engagement ring is sitting pretty on your finger, it probably feels like a weight has been lifted off your shouldersits one less very important item you can check off your to-do list! But, the ring journey is not over just yet: now its time to pick a wedding band that matches your engagement ring.

While some engagement rings are made by jewelry brands that offer matching wedding bands, many are not. It can be difficult to find a band that looks right at home with your ring, especially if your ring features an unusual center stone, a unique center stone cut, or a bold metal. Since these two rings are going to be worn together forever, you want them to really flow together perfectly, like a match made in heaven.

That said, theres a lot to consider, and so many options to choose from. Brides spoke with jeweler Colleen Montague, who says that one of the most important things you want to do is make sure that the engagement ring remains the star of the show. Try to choose a wedding band that wont overpower your engagement ring, she says.

Guidelines For Choosing An Engagement Ring

Theres a formula thats popular to use when looking for the perfect engagement ring. That formula is:

Finger Length x Finger Width + Ring Shape + Ring Style

Basically, youre comparing the size of your hand and the width and length of your finger against the style and width of the ring, as well as the size and shape of your center stone.

Dont forget to think of your usual nail shape and length. If you keep them long and manicured, they make your fingers look longer. If you keep them trimmed short, your fingers will look shorter.

You also need to make sure your ring is sized correctly, whatever style you choose. Theres nothing pretty about an ill-fitting ring. Get it too small and your skin will bulge around the band. Definitely not cute! Get it too big, and youll find it slipping and sliding all over the place, or worse, possibly even sliding off your finger altogether.

Keep in mind that these are simply recommendations. If you absolutely adore a particular style of ring, then, by all means, go for it. You want a ring you love. We suggest trying it on, but also trying on other styles as well. You might find that you like another cut or style even better once you actually see it on your finger.

Emerald Cut Diamond Color

Choosing a Wedding Band for Emerald Cut 3 Stone Ring

Similar to Clarity, Color is another attribute that is more noticeable in an Emerald Cut. Its large table and step cuts retain more color than other Diamond Shapes, allowing the eye to see the natural Color of the stone.

The GIA grades Color on a scale from D to Z. D is the most colorless while Z contains easily noticeable brown or yellow tint.

When you look at an Emerald Diamond of a J grade or higher with the naked eye, you can easily notice a slight yellow tint. Because the naked eye notices no tint at an I Color grade or better, we recommend this range for the most beauty and best value. If you choose a diamond below an I, such as a G or H, you will likely not notice much of a differenceif any at all. Paying more for a lower Color grade is usually not worth the additional price.

Its also important to ensure your diamond looks white in relation its setting. For example, this stunning I color Emerald Diamond in a white gold pave setting from James Allen bursts with white, radiant color. Even this J colored Emerald from James Allen looks shimmering in a rose gold setting. Overall its important to review the Diamonds Color and setting before purchasing.

If Your Engagement Ring Is A Vintage Design Or Family Heirloom

If your engagement ring is vintage inspired or a family heirloom thats been handed down for decades, the chances of finding a suitable wedding band to match your engagement ring may seem rather low. Which is why our team suggest choosing a wedding band that has one main element in common with your vintage design.

For example, if your vintage design features rose gold elements, then we suggest selecting a rose gold wedding band. If your vintage design features symbols or hand-crafted elements, then we suggest choosing a wedding band that reflects these elements. A design such as the Vintage Baguette and Round Channel Set Diamond Band or straight band with milgrain detail pictured below, are popular with brides who have a vintage inspired engagement ring.

Best Setting For Emerald Cut Diamond

Emerald cuts fit well in many different styles, but they really fit perfectly with more understated settings. Emerald cuts go well with solitaire and simple pave settings, and are perfect for three stone settings.

Solitaire

A solitaire setting lets a lot of light hit the diamond, amplifying the hall of mirrors effect of a well-proportioned Emerald Cut. It showcases the unique style of an Emerald Diamond perfectly. Its very hard to go wrong with a simple solitaire setting and a beautiful Emerald Cut.

For inspiration, see this Classic Four-Prong Solitaire Engagement Ring from Blue Nile with an Emerald Cut Diamond.

Pavé

A pavé setting will make your ring stand out more, without taking away from the Emerald Diamond as a centerpiece. The accent diamonds add some flair to the ring, at the same time amplifying the fire of the center stone.

See this 14K White Gold Petite Pavé Engagement Ring from James Allen as an example of how the Emerald Cut can work in a pavé setting.

Three Stone

Emerald Diamonds also work beautifully in a three stone setting. Two smaller stones flanking the Emerald in the middle helps draw attention to the center stone and amplify its beauty.

Brilliant Cut diamonds on each side provide a great contrast to the Emeralds long, straight facets, such as in this .

Alternatively, you can flank the Emerald with Baguette Diamonds like in this example from James Allen below for a sleek and classy look.

How To Choose An Emerald Cut Diamond

  • Before you even start looking at diamonds, determine your budget. It will narrow down your search and prevent you from falling in love with a stone you cant afford.
  • Once youve got your emerald cut diamond in front of you, first look at the cut. Make sure the stone is symmetrical, and the parallel edges are even. View the diamond under several different light sources, including natural light, and make sure no large, dark areas are visible. Make sure the proportions of the stone meet your needs and taste.
  • Examine the color under different light sources. Emerald cut diamonds dont sparkle the way round brilliant diamonds do, so you want your stone to be as colorless as possible. Brilliant cut diamonds will appear whiter than emerald cut diamonds of the same color grade. If you choose a setting with brilliant cut accent stones, make sure you examine all of the diamonds next to each other. Dont rely solely on the color grade, or youll risk your center stone appearing yellow compared to its accent stones.
  • Inspect the clarity of the diamond. The large surface areas of emerald cut diamonds make it easier to spot any cloudiness or dark inclusions. Make sure youre happy with the clarity of your diamond since the cut wont hide any visible flaws.
